On-Going Initiatives
Checkout Challenge
Runs April 6, 2022 thru April 6, 2023
We hope you will get excited as we ramp up for our next It's a Small World Book Project initiative: The Checkout Challenge! We’ve got the books – now let’s read them! Dedicating ourselves to reading and engaging with these books is an important part of the ISW Book Project and we can’t wait to start this work together! Remember that all of the books have something to teach us (that means that adults can learn a lot from the kids’ books as well as those written for adults readers!). Our very own Pam Grugan and a special friend of hers can tell you all about the ISW Book Project and the Checkout Challenge in the video below.
The Checkout Challenge officially begins tomorrow April 6th and will extend for a full year. The book collection is currently housed in the back of the sanctuary and is ready for you to start checking out books. To help guide your reading, and add a fun element of competition, we have designed three Reading Clubs for you. Additionally there are Reading Club Bookmarks provided so that you can keep track of your progress and even win a prize:
- Around the World Club - Read all 52 books in the collection over the course of the year!
- Know Your Neighbor Club - Read 24 books from the collection over the course of the year!
- Shalom Club - Read 12 books from the collection over the course of the year!
- Decide which Reading Club is the best fit for you and pick up the corresponding Reading Club Bookmark provided in the back of the sanctuary
- Take a look through the collection and select which book(s) you would like to read first
- Sign-out the books by following the instructions provided at the table
- Use your Reading Club Bookmark to keep track of your reading and turn it in once you've finished the challenge to earn prizes!
About This Project
As followers of Christ, we are called to work toward healing and wholeness for all people. Stone Church of the Brethren has recently received a grant from the national Church of the Brethren to help us work on healing racism - in ourselves, our church, and our community. Please read below to discover how the grant money will be used, as well as how you can be involved in this project - wrestling alongside your siblings in the faith - and having a chance to purchase books that may bring healing in our community.
What will this project involve/how will the grant money be used?
What can I do to help/be involved?
This project will unfold over the course of a year (or more!). Below are some of the ways you can participate right now:
What will this project involve/how will the grant money be used?
- Funding intentional learning opportunities
- Funding guest speakers
- The purchasing of part of a single curated book collection to be sent to Huntingdon County Library; the books are meant to diversify the stories, knowledge, and media that is available to young people within our community. The books focus on the history, lived experiences, and stories of people of color.
- Purchasing the materials needed to display and store the books well at the Library
- But the grant money is just the start - we want to do more! We CAN do more!
What can I do to help/be involved?
